Ok, so you've downloaded this program, and your probably thinking to
yourself:
- Boy what a weird name this has, I don't even understand it!
- Is this program any good?
- Why am I talking to myself?
Well, for one thing, if you can't read the name, then you desperatly
need to go back to school! Yes, this program is good. And if you don't
understand it, that's what this DOC is for!!!!! Well, let's get on with
the installation, shall we?
>>>> Installation <<<<
Ok, I've made the installation VERY easy. All you have to do is type
MAKECFG <Config FileName>. The config filename is the name of the file
you want for the configuration file. Then you just enter in the things
it asks for and it saves those values in the config file. Then you
just hit TWCITADL <Config file>. Config file would be the name of the file
you just created using MakeCFG. But, if you want to edit the file manually
here is the setup for the config file:
Line 1 *** Sysop Name
Line 2 *** BBS Name
Line 3 --- Path to Trade Wars data files
Line 4 --- Registration Code
Line 5 *** Fuel Ore Multiplier
Line 6 *** Organics Multiplier
Line 7 *** Equipment Multiplier
Line 8 *** Colonists Multiplier
Line 9 *** Customized Log Line 1
Line 10 *** Customized Log Line 2
You can add whatever you want after now. The program only reads the
first 10 lines.
Lines marked with "***" are for the registered version only. Lines
marked "---" are for both registered, and unregistered versions.
If you have registered this program, and you leave any of those lines
blank (execpt for the first 4 lines), it will fill in its defaults for you,
so there are no errors that are produced.
If you are an unregistered user, then the line format must be the same as
the registered version. What I mean is that the path MUST be line 3. Don't
put it into line 1 or else you will get an error. Just put in two blank
lines in your config file and then put in your path for the 3rd line, then
add one more blank line after that. MakeCFG will do that all for you, this
is only for editing the file manually.
Make sure that both TWDATA.DAT and TWOPENG.DAT are in the same directory
and that you DON'T put a \ at the end of the path in the config file.
For example:
The right way - C:\DOORS\TW
The wrong way - C:\DOORS\TW\
Oh! One more thing! Be sure to execute this program in your daily
maitenance batch file AFTER EXTERN.EXE!! This is very important because
after Extern has run, it resets the time and stuff. You should do this
with ALL of your TW utilities!
>>>> What this program does <<<<
Well, now that you have it installed, you're probably itching to know
what it does, right? I guess not, well anyways, what it does is this,
it looks at all of the planets in the game, and looks to see if they
are building citadels, it then checks the amount of fuel ore, organics,
equipment, and colonists on the planet. Then it preforms a series of
mathematical equations, and then decreases the amount of time, according
to what they have. Then it writes to the log file telling users that it
is there, so they don't think you are cheating.
>>>> How do you contact us <<<<
You can contact us through the Trade Wars Fido Echo, (we read it all the
time). Or you can call my BBS: The Metal Zone 1-414-541-4336. If you
have any problems (I don't think you should have any), or if you don't
understand the production mulipliers, then write to us.
>>>> Registering <<<<
To register this program, send a self-addressed stamped envelope with
5 American dollars to my address. You will get your code within the next
week or so, depending on how far away from me you are. Anyways send your
money to:
Mike Sommers
5333 west Whitaker Ave.
Greenfield, WI 53220-3535
I think 5 dollars is a very good price for this utility. Just check
out some of the stuff it offers you.
>>>> What you get by registering <<<<
Here are the functions in the registered version:
- Your name on the title screen (Wow, huh?). :)
- Customizable multipliers (explained below).
- Customizable log entries.
- Reg. Code will work for all new versions.
- Disabling of all the nag messages.
These are all the things you get from registering. They are described
in the next section.
>>>> What do all of those registered functions do? <<<<
The customizable "multipliers" you have been hearing all over this doc
are numbers the the program uses to to do calculations. The defaults are:
Fuel Ore - 3
Orgainics - 7
Equipment - 13
Colonists - 23
These numbers are for the unregistered version, and cannot be changed.
However, the registered version DOES let you edit them. I have done a
little test, and here is what I came up with:
A trader has a level 2 citadel and wants to upgrade to level 3.
He has (These values are rounded off for simplicity):
3,000,000 colonists,
8,000 units of fuel
6,000 units of organics
5,000 units of equipment.
Now, when the program was run, it took off 1 day using the default
values for the multipliers. Then I changed the values from the defaults
to their doubles (ie. 3 would be 6, 7 would be 14, etc..), and ran the
program again with the exact same numbers and everything. It took 3 days
off.
As you can see, the time it took off doubled (the actual percentage
using the default values was around 150%). This was just a test, but you
should base the values you use upon this, depending on the of difficulty of
the game. Do a little experimenting with this to find the values that are
right for your game.
Oh, just a little word of warning, don't use the MakeCFG utility to edit
your config file, use a text editor. It can get to be a real pain in the
butt to keep redoing the whole file. The line format is presented above in
the "Installation" section.
The TWCitadel writes a message into the daily log telling the users it
is there. In the unregistered version, it puts into the log a couple nag
messages. In the registered version, you will be able to customize what
it puts into the log. It gives you two lines to write whatever you want.
Or, if you choose not to type anything for it, it will use its default logs.
Sound cool yet?
Your reg. code will also work for any new versions of TWCitadel I bring
out, which is a lot better than paying for each new version!
Well, that is it for the most definable functions, and if you do feel
it is worth it, then please send in your registration!
>>>> Errors <<<<
To my knowledge there are no errors. The only errors you might get are
the ones stated above and path and file not found. But, if you do get an
unknown error, then check your TWDATA.DAT file. It should ALWAYS be
214,452 bytes in length. If it is not, then the data is corrupted. But
to report your errors, call my BBS or write in the TW Fido Echo.
If you do try and test different values for the multipliers (registered
version only), TWCitadel will keep adding log entries to the log file, so
be sure to edit TWOPENG.DAT and delete all of those extra log entries when
you are done.
>>>> Thanks You <<<<
Well, I'd like to say thank you to the following people:
- Mark Gengler, for figuring out that dang math! :)
- Gary Martin for making such a cool game!
- Jason Boyd for making the file with all of the TW file formats.
And once again, I'd like to thank them all.
Later,
Mike Sommers a.k.a. The Dark Shadow
